Winter can be an exciting time for children, but it also comes with an increased risk of orthopaedic injuries. As temperatures drop and snow begins to fall, it’s important to stay vigilant and take steps to keep your little ones safe from falls, sprains and fractures. Here are some key tips to help prevent injuries during the colder months:
Slipping and Falling
Ice can be hard to detect on the pavement, especially when it’s dark outside. There are a few injuries that can come from slipping and falling on ice, including but not limited to:
- head injuries
- sprains and strains
- fractures
These injuries most often affect the ankles, hips, wrists and back. It is important to wear shoes with good traction and avoid walking on pavement when it is dark outside to prevent injuries.
Sledding
Sledding is a great way for kids to get out of the house and enjoy the winter snow scene. However, there are precautions that need to be taken to avoid injuries:
- Avoid sledding in areas with trees, fences and other obstacles
- Wear boots, gloves and other warm clothing
- Wear protective gear like snow sport helmets
- Pick a sled that can be steered and has braking features
- Keep a cell phone handy or use the buddy system
Ice Skating
Ice skating is a family-friendly activity that can help children strengthen their balance and flexibility. However, as with any sport, injuries happen. Sprains, strains and breaks are common injuries for this sport. To decrease the risk of injury, follow these guidelines:
- Stretch calves before activity
- Make sure skate fit properly and laces are secured
- Limit jumps and twists
- Rest between skating sessions to allow for any necessary recovery
There is no shortage of injury risks during winter activities, however, all are easily preventable by following the safety guidelines above. To prevent ice-related injuries:
- Wear footwear made for winter weather
- Be prepared to protect your head in case of a fall
- Shorten your stride length and slow down
- Apply salt or sand to driveways, sidewalks and stairs to improve traction on icy surfaces
